About SoHo New York

SoHo is a neighborhood in lower Manhattan, New York, USA, famous for its cast iron buildings and known as an area for artist and art galleries. Its name comes from “SOuth of HOuston” Street.

In the 19th century the area comprised some farms, hills, a swamp and buildings in a Greek-Revival and Federal style, but by the mid-century these were replaced by buildings of cast iron and masonry. At the time the area was a shopping and theater district, but as the city center moved uptown, it declined rapidly. Still, in the 1970s artists were legally allowed to occupy the spaces from the upper floors of the historic buildings, initially built as commercial lofts.

The 1990s brought a gentrification wave and nowadays shopping boutiques of famous national and international brands can be found in the area.
SoHo is included in the SoHo-Cast Ion Historic District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places thanks to almost 500 buildings of which many have cast iron architectural elements. The district has the world’s greatest collection of cast iron architecture. At first, cast iron was used for decorative purposes to pre-existing buildings in order to attract commercial clients, but then it became a main feature of SoHo area.

Nowadays, the district is a popular tourist destination due to its interesting architecture and to the fact that it hosts numerous fashion boutiques; therefore, it is famous shopping area. As such, SoHo Hotels New York are proud to welcome you in New York and are wishing you a pleasant stay while we will be taking care of your accommodation.
